OLLI IN GREECE: May/June 2010

University of Arkansas faculty Daniel Levine (Classical Studies) and George Paulson (Modern Greek) will lead a two-week OLLI study tour in Greece in late May/early June of 2010. This tour is designed for adults with a serious interest in Greece: its culture and landscape (and cuisine!). We will visit a variety of sites and museums, as we explore Greece -- from the Bronze Age to the 21st century. Some highlights include:  Athens, Nauplion, Mycenae, Corinth, Delphi, Eleusis, Olympia, and a cruise to Crete and several Aegean islands.

Our pre-trip meetings will focus on some basics of Greek art, history, literature, archaeology, and language. Our aim is to spend an enjoyable and enriching time in the Mediterranean, reminding ourselves of the timelessness of the Classics, the glories of Byzantium, and the contemporary relevance of Greece in the modern world, on the cusp of Europe and Asia.

Daniel Levine (Professor, Classical Studies) has won several local and national awards for teaching excellence, has published numerous articles, chapters, and reviews on Greek language, literature and culture.  He has led eleven study tours in Greece. This is his 30th year of teaching Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies at the University of Arkansas

George Paulson (Lecturer, Modern Greek) has lived and taught in Greece, Turkey, and Spain.  A Greek-American, he has a Master’s degree in Ancient Greek History from Ohio State University. Mr. Paulson has taught at the U of A since 2002, where he is a popular and devoted teacher of Modern Greek. His passions include Modern Greek Literature (especially Cavafy and Kazantzakis), Byzantium, and Modern Greek history.
